Volant Jacket

A perpetual favorite in the Feathered Friends line, the Volant marks the transition from sewn-through construction to a fully baffled garment. These baffles, combined with high lofting 850+ fill power down, Pertex® Shield® XT waterproof/ breathable fabric, and reinforced sleeves and shoulders creates an incredibly warm, durable, and reliable jacket. Used extensively by the climbing rangers on Rainier, the Volant Jacket is the Feathered Friends recommendation for Northwest summit attempts, chilly ascents in South America, smaller peaks in Alaska, and the lower Himalaya.

Best piece of winter gear.Review by Michigan Man
I have worn my Volant on Mt Blanc, France and during northern Michigan winters. It is light weight, versatile, packable, and has lasted for 15 years so far. Well worth the money. (Posted on 5/20/2017)

Volant jacket is greatReview by Kraszman
Got this jacket along with a Widgeon bag. First time Feathered Friends customer, so was a little concerned spending that much in one go. Not a bit disappointed. This jacket (and the bag) are some of the best quality clothing gear I've seen. I'm 170 pounds, 6 feet tall. Got a large size. It's a close versus a loose fit, and I've come to really like it. Incredibly warm! Comes with a hood that actually fits and is functional. Coldest test so far is -22F and was warm and comfortable. Also, the design makes it ideal for hiking/climbing with gear. Tried & TrueReview by Scott Rock
So, I bought the volant jacket in 1996 I think with a FF sleeping bag. 20 years later, I'm still wearing the volant jacket every day of the winter in the Canadian shores of the great lakes in up to -30C. Winter steelheading, climbing, photography, hiking, camping its served its purpose in just about every condition with nothing but a t-shirt underneath in most cases. Keep in mind, this was their 1996 model and its been improved greatly since the first generations. My volant has become a bit worn over 20 years so I just stopped by to get some pricing. I'm buying myself a new one for christmas. Don't hesitate. Buy it.

Sidenote: My FF sleeping bag from 20 years ago, still looks new and remains my primary bag. (Posted on 10/26/2016)
wonderful jacketReview by Flinton Callahan II
well made, very warm, well worth the price. i am 5'10", weigh 195 lb and have a solid build. had to return size L because it was tight. return was easy and XL was perfect fit. the zipper easily catches on the baffle which is a moderate nuisance. highly recommend. (Posted on 2/13/2015)
Volant Jacket OverviewReview by Mike
Bought the Volant Jacket 4 weeks ago. Not sure what to say. There is Canada Goose, North face, Arc'teryx to name a few. This Volant is by far the best thing ever!! Thank you Feathered Friends!! I'm now your biggest fan for ever !!
Snow blowing today in Canada at Minus 18C ( -2 F ) Wind-chill of minus 26C ( -15F ). Wearing my Volant and a t-shirt. And yes I had to unzip this jacket to cool off!! This is amazing! I'll never wear anything else from here on in. I got the Pacific Blue! I love it!, it stands out and gets allot of attention around town.
Thanks again Feathered Friends !! At $409 US. This is a deal of a life time, if you want to be very warm and cozy, without worrying about the bitter cold temperatures, then this is definitely the jacket for you!! The fit of these jackets are true. I went with the MED. I'm 180lbs. 5'8" athletic build. It's perfect!!
You will need no outer shell. If it's raining or freezing rain, you are wearing a jacket that is too warm for those temperatures!! And to get an outer shell over this jacket?? not going to be easy ! And definitely not neccessary LOL !
The Volant outer shell material is tough! Very tough! It's not a nylon that makes you nervous to wear or snag. This is meant for the cold outdoors! This is serious warmth!!
Don't hesitate if you are considering this jacket!! (Posted on 2/2/2015)
This Jacket is BOSSReview by Chris
I've owned my Volant for 6 years and it is still going strong. Its kept me warm up 14ers in the Sierra and Cascades, including Rainier. The taslite fabric on the shoulders and arms is burly and the jacket is resistant to snow. The fit is more form fitting that a typical puffy. I am normally a L top in every other company, but an XL for Feathered Friends. You won't regret getting this jacket! (Posted on 12/12/2014)
The coziest thing you will ever wearReview by Mark York
I purchased my Volant 19 years ago. I like to stay warm, so I use it for an outer shell, light rain coat and heavy winter coat. When the temperature drops to single digits, I found this coat zips into a heavy gortex shell. Be careful, this combo is so toasty, you will find yourself easily sweating even at those extreme temperatures.

The Volant packs small, is incredibly warm, bomb proof (although not barbed wire proof) and has been my number one winter outerwear for almost 20 years now. I keep thinking of buying another, but can't find any reason to retire this one. Thank you Feathered Friends.

Fit Review by Rob
Sorry for posting this in the review area but I would like to know if the Volant is too bulky to fit under an 'athletic cut' Goretex shell.

Hi Rob,

The Volant has a considerable amount of loft, and wouldn't really fit under a shell jacket. Since it has Pertex Shield shell fabric, it is most often worn over other layers.

Thanks for the question!

PriceReview by FreeFlowin
Did the price of this coat go up from what Outdoor Gear Lab states just because it was picked as their #1 coat? Their review was in spring 2013 and I have been looking at these since fall 2013. Sorry not a review, just an inquiry.

Hi FreeFlowin,
Indeed the price has increased, but it is unrelated to the review from OutdoorGearLab. The main reason is the cost of goose down has skyrocketed in recent years, with the past year seeing a significant increase. This has impacted nearly every brand that makes down products. You can read a brief synopsis from Outside Magazine here: http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-gear/gear-shed/gear-guy/Is-the-Price-of-Down-Set-to-Skyrocket.html

Thanks for your question!
