Volant Jacket

A perpetual favorite in the Feathered Friends line, the Volant marks the transition from quilted construction to a fully baffled garment. With the shortest cut amongst our baffled jackets, the Volant is an excellent choice for ice climbing and any situation where access to a harness is crucial. Used extensively by the climbing rangers on Rainier, the Volant Jacket is the Feathered Friends recommendation for Northwest summit attempts as well as for chilly use in South America, Alaska, and the lower Himalaya.

Ideal For: Mountaineering/Winter Camping/Ice Climbing/General Cold Climate Use

  1. The Holy Grail

by Michele on Dec 16, 2012

My partner and I hike all winter in the Adirondack mountains of NY and the White Mountains of NH. Though it's not South American or the Himalayas, conditions can be BRUTAL in winter. We hiked in a minus 10 degree F day (minus 40 over a peak with the windchill) twice last year. That's where this jacket comes in - it's a LIFESAVER!!!! Nothing by companies like Patagonia or North Face even compare to the sheer amount of down, the baffling and the construction of this jacket. It is SO WARM. On really cold days, I'll put this one when we stop to have a snack or to change into crampons. We also don it on peaks so we can spend time enjoying the view, even if it's REALLY cold. The hood is amazing and goggles have no trouble fitting under it. You won't find a warmer or better made jacket - sure, it's not super flattering, but this is about keeping WARM on a mountain. Nothing compares.
  2. Canadian

by Michael on Dec 12, 2012

I can't yet comment on the warmth of this jacket, since we've still barely broken 0 deg. C where I am, but I suspect it'll stand up to the cold quite well come January.

As an international order, there are some inherent drawbacks. I obviously wasn't able to try on the jacket before ordering, so the size I received was too small. However, customer service is excellent. Exchanging for the appropriate size was no problem at all, and the replacement jacket arrived far sooner than I'd imagined.

In all, if you're ordering from Canada, don't hesitate. These guys will do everything possible to simplify the process. This is definitely one of those things you buy once for life, so it's absolutely worth it.
