Fabrics & Down

Fabrics

Feathered Friends has always been at the forefront of fabric technology having pioneered the use of GORE-TEX® in sleeping bags decades ago and we continue that tradition to this day as we employ some of the newest and most innovative fabrics available.  Down garments and sleeping bags require a soft and supple fabric to achieve maximum loft and thus, maximum thermal efficiency.  There is a fine balancing act between fabrics that are just too fragile for use in an outdoor application and those that while durable, negate the effectiveness of the down insulation.  We have carefully chosen fabrics throughout our product line to complement the intended use, and while we always strive to maintain the balance between durability and weight, some fabrics such as the Pertex Endurance® UL at less than an ounce per square yard, tip that scale in favor of superior weight savings.

Schoeller NanoSphere®
Specifications:
100% nylon. 20 denier by 20 denier
1.1 oz/sq.yd total weight
Water-Resistant/Breathable NanoSphere treatment

NanoSphere® is a fabric treatment which, through the use of nanoparticles, alters the material to a much higher degree of water and stain resistance without blocking the natural porosity of the weave. It is a vastly improved version of the durable water repellant (DWR) treatment that most outdoor fabrics have.  At a microscopic level, it gives water almost no surface to cling to causing it to bead up and roll off while also creating a natural self-cleaning effect.  NanoSphere is oleophobic, which is beneficial to repelling a large range of potential contaminates such as body oils.  The treatment is highly durable and more importantly, involves no potentially toxic or environmentally damaging emissions at any point of the manufacturing process.  NanoSphere treatment can be rejuvenated with exposure to heat and we recommend drying your products at a moderate heat level to maximize this effect.

Pertex® Endurance® UL
Specifications:
10 denier by 10 denier, 275 x 235 thread count mini-ripstop
.94 oz/sq.yd total weight
Water-Resistant/Breathable Pertex Endurance coating

Feathered Friends pioneered the use of this ultralight water-resistant and breathable fabric in our UL900 line of sleeping bags which combine cutting edge fabric technology with the highest quality materials and 900 fill down.  Refinements in fabric weaving and coating have made ever lighter fabrics possible, translating into many ounces removed from the weight of our ultralight bags. Besides the weight savings, this light and supple fabric also allows the super premium down to loft to the maximum. The difference in loft between otherwise identical bags made with the PTX-UL and other leading waterproof/breathable fabrics is striking.

Pertex® Shield® XT
Specifications:
30 denier by 30 denier, 143 x 132 thread count with a 50 denier rip-stop weave
1.66 oz/sq.yd total weight
Waterproof/Breathable Pertex® Shield® technology

XT fabric available throughout our expedition garment line relies on Pertex® Shield® technology to achieve a superior degree of water resistance and moisture vapor transport.  Highly durable, the larger yarns used in this fabric also allow for a greater degree of vapor transfer due to the larger spaces at the intersections in the weave.  We employ this fabric for garments that face rugged use in challenging conditions.

The Power of Down

Down is a tremendous insulator - you simply cannot get a better insulator that packs down well, keeps the weight low, and has tremendous longevity. Whether used in garments, sleeping bags, or bedding, down excels at keeping you warm.

What to look for when comparing down products

Fill Power

Not all down is the same. When talking about down, or comparing products, one of the most important factors to consider is fill power

Fill power is the measurement of loft that down provides. Effectively, it is the quality measurement - the higher the fill power, the better the down is.

How do we measure fill power?

Measuring fill power is quite simple: one ounce (28.35 grams) of down is placed in a graduated cylinder. A 68.4 gram weighted disk is placed on top of the down. Once the disk settles, the compressed volume, measured in cubic inches, is the fill power. So 600 fill power down has a volume of 600 cubic inches per ounce of down, 850 fill power down is 850 cubic inches per ounce of down, 900 fill power down is 900 cubic inches per ounce of down.

Fill Power

Fill Weight

Fill power is the quality of down used in a product. Fill weight is the physical amount of down inside the product. We measure the fill weight in ounces (or grams for the rest of the world). For instance, a jacket may have a fill weight of 9 ounces. That means there are 9 ounces of down inside - regardless of what fill power the down is. Knowing the fill weight and fill power gives you a better baseline to compare products, because one of those numbers on its own doesn't give you enough information. A jacket with 9 ounces of 850 fill power down will be substantially warmer than a jacket with 9 ounces of 600 fill power down.

Why Feathered Friends Down?

We seek out on the best down available. We source down with the highest down to feather ratio possible, as well as the most mature down plumes. For garments and sleeping bags, we only use 850+ and 900+ premium fill power down. This gives you the most warmth for the weight. For bedding, where weight isn't as much of a concern, we use 700+ fill power goose down, as well as offerings with 850+ premium fill power goose down.
