The Proton Pant from Arc'teryx is active insulation from the waist down at it's finest.  Active insulation layers like these are designed to maximize breathability in cooler conditions to keep you comfortable though a broad range of temperatures and activity levels. These pants represent the 3-way intersection of something like a warm ultralight softshell pant, a lightweight synthethic mid-layer, and superlight synthetic puffy pants all in one.  Wear them as a next-to-skin warmweight baselayer under your waterproof rain shell pants in cold conditions, or as a standalone warm breathable pant for winter hikes, snowshoe trips, and approaches.   These are also great for wearing around camp on cooler evenings, in your sleeping bag for extra warmth, for cooler weather walks around town, and even for those winter drives to and from the trailhead.
