Winter Field Tested in Annapurna Range and Khumbu

I bought the Widgeon Regular in fall of 2021 for a winter 2021 trip to the Nepalese Himalayas. I invested a total of 56 days in this bag. I used a Cocoon cotton mummyliner that adds up to 2.9C° of warmth. I tested this bag to a recorded -20C° (-5F°). Nights/early mornings plausibly colder before I woke to record temps. Average across those 56 days was -10C°. Pros: - Warmth-to-weight ratio is impressive at this price-point. Anything lighter would require a custom bag with a correspondingly higher price-point. - Loft is exceptional...to the extent that our two FF bags were often a point of trail discussion. One team member had a -20C° bag that had at best 1/3 the loft of our similarly rated FF bags. - Pertex exterior is durable and performed as spec'd in terms of preventing absorption of external condensation/moisture. - Not one event of internal or external body area condensation issues. Bag is distributing and maintaining heat efficiently and therefore preventing condensation. - Warm! Cold nights in the high Khumbu I would initially wear base layers until the bag warmed up. **Note**: Even on the coldest nights, I had to strip base layers, and sleep in the bag only with the mummyliner and I am a thin dude at 70kgs. Bag's comfort rating seems to be at or close to the -23C° rating FF has given it. Amazing. - Bag is aesthetically appealing - Large YKK zippers with non-snag interior system performed as designed. - Non-elastic mummy drawstrings operate in cold temps without risk of breaking. - Footbox is genuinely insulated. - Pat at FF was professional, communicative, and timely as we worked to assemble a large gear order for this winter trip Cons: - Most important constructive feedback on this end is that the bottom draft collar appeared to have been under filled. Since these bags are assembled by hand rather than by an industrial production line, I suspect this is peculiar to my specific bag. I think the issue could have been caught with a more thorough quality assurance inspection. - At 1483grams, this bag is a beast! Warmth clearly costs increased mass. Consider whether this bag genuinely fits your use case. I also would be curious to discover a line of bags FF produces using 1000 fill and its corresponding weight savings. - No internal pocket for phones/sat comms/etc. FF, another reviewer raises this point too. Perhaps revisit this design element? **Note on packability - A previous reviewer calls attention to the bag's packability after it has lofted. I didn't personally find this problematic in the field, although in practice safely packing the bag does take a couple of minutes. I perceive that this is by design because retention of that loft when bag is in use is precisely the variable keeping the user warm. Were the air trapped among the lofted down more easily vacated, a user might encounter much colder nights in the bag. Consequently, this was not a shortcoming of the bag for me. Attached is an image in a Kathmandu guesthouse of the red Widgeon and the blue Arctic Finch after 56 days of use. Still lofting like day 1. In sum, phenomenal bag that maintains FF's stellar reputation. Recommended.

Initial impressions

I have just started using the bag. It just reached 17 degrees last night and the bag preformed very well, keeping me very comfortable through the night. The inside is very comfortable and it is a quiet bag. The zipper works fairly well, probably better than most. The bag seems well constructed, time will tell. At this point, I belive it will be comfortable to a least zero degrees. Plenty of room in this long bag. I am 5'10" and 178 lbs. I am a side sleeper and have no problem. The hood on the bag works great and very warm.

Toasty & Comfy!

We rarely provide reviews and then usually only after a year of product use. This bag is warm to the rated temperature (first use in the Himalayas). Lots of loft head to toe and all the way around. Extremely well made. Love how it comes with the down chain of custody, tracing the down back to the goose type, region and country of origin.

great sleeping bag for colder weather

I bought the Widgeon for a trip to Nepal - trekking to EBC and then climbing Island Peak. It was perfect.

Great bag

Warm, lightweight, comfy bag highly recommend. Wish they offered it in blue.
