Down Comforter Guide

Choosing the right down comforter.

Five decades of crafting down comforters in Seattle has taught us this: the perfect comforter is a balance of construction, fill power, fabric, and warmth, all matched to how you actually sleep. Here's the full picture.

Step 1 of 4

Construction shapes the feel & look.

There are two ways to keep down evenly distributed inside a comforter: sew the layers together (Bavarian) or build vertical fabric walls between them (Baffled Box). Both work very well. They produce different finishes, different feels, and suit different preferences.

Bavarian Sewn-Through

Pillowy · Quilted finish

Top and bottom fabric layers stitched directly together at each chamber edge. The down rests in pillowy pockets that give the comforter its classic, traditional quilted look. As the seams are fully sewn, down cannot shift from chamber to chamber.

Best for Active sleepers, traditional aesthetics, and anyone who wants the familiar puffy quilted look.

Baffled Box

Lofted · Smooth finish

Vertical fabric walls (baffles) inside the comforter create deep rectangular boxes. The down has room to fully loft without being compressed at the seams, producing a flat, smooth, luxe finish. The down insulation is more lofted along the seams producing a warmer comforter.

Best for Maximum warmth and loft, smooth hotel-style aesthetics.
Step 2 of 4

Fill power is the quality dial.

Fill power measures how much loft (volume) one ounce of down produces. Higher fill power means more air trapped per ounce, which means more warmth at less weight. We offer two tiers across the comforter line, both 100% RDS-certified white goose down sourced from Eastern Europe.

700+ Fill Power

Excellent quality. The most-recommended choice.
  • Down: 700+ goose down
  • Origin: Eastern Europe
  • Certification: 100% RDS
  • Best characterized: Excellent insulation, popular
Best for: Popular with many buyers. Year-round comfort in temperate climates, and an outstanding price-to-quality ratio. Our most popular fill power.

Every ounce of down is RDS-certified. Sourced ethically, never live-plucked, never force-fed, and audited annually by independent third-party auditors. Read more about our down →

Step 3 of 4

Weight is the comfort dial.

Five weights cover everyone from the hottest sleeper to the coldest. The right weight depends on your climate, your bedroom temperature, and your personal heat. Not just the season.

SummerBavarian only
Year-round for warm sleepers and warm climates. The lightest comforter we make, with a smaller square grid for less down per chamber. Perfect for late spring through early fall. Summer is available only in our Bavarian Down Comforter →
LightBavarian only
Very popular in warm climates, warm bedrooms, year-round use. The favorite pick for warm sleepers, the Pacific Northwest, parts of California, and the South.
MediumBavarian or Baffled Box
Our most popular weight. An excellent all-around choice for winter in temperate climates and most temperature-controlled bedrooms. Where most buyers should start.
ArcticBavarian or Baffled Box
Chilly rooms, cold sleepers, mountain homes. Substantially warmer than Medium. The right answer for under-65°F bedrooms or anyone who reaches for an extra blanket all winter.
UltimateBaffled Box only
The warmest comforter we make. Built for very cold climates, very cold sleepers, and unheated rooms. The "wood stove goes out" comforter.
When in doubt, go one weight cooler

The most common return we see is buyers exchanging Medium for Light. Down comforters are warmer than people expect. Pair-sleepers compound this, and modern bedrooms run warmer than they used to. If you're stuck between two weights, pick the cooler one. You can always add a throw on cold nights; you can't cool down an over-warm comforter.

Four questions to ask before you buy.

Are you a warm or cold sleeper?
Most adults run warmer than they think. If you wake up sweaty under your current bedding, size down a weight. If you reach for an extra blanket nightly, size up.
Do you sleep with a partner?
Two people sleep meaningfully warmer than one. Figure roughly one weight class warmer when paired. Pets count too.
What's your climate?
Year-round in WA, OR, CA, or the Deep South: Light. Temperate winter (most of the US): Medium. Cold winters or unheated rooms: Arctic to Ultimate.
Are you using a duvet cover?
Some duvet covers can add a bit of extra warmth to the overall down comforter kit. If you have a really thick duvet cover, you might consider a lighter option.
Step 4 of 4

Sizing your comforter to your bed.

All comforters come in standard mattress sizes. The right call is matching the comforter to your mattress, not your duvet cover. Comforters benefit from an inch or two of overhang for a clean drape.

Standard Comforter Sizes

Twin 68" × 88" Twin / Twin XL beds
Queen 90" × 98" Full and Queen beds
King 107" × 98" Standard King beds
Cal King 98" × 116" California King beds
Pro tip: If you sleep with a partner who hogs the comforter (we know who you are), size up. A King on a Queen bed is one of the most-suggested fixes for couples.
Beyond The Basics

The fabric is half the comforter.

The shell is what touches your skin every night, and it defines the hand feel of the whole comforter. Across our line we offer two different cotton fabrics, each with a distinct character. Here's the difference.

Cambric Cotton 400 TC

Crisp · Classic · Tightly Woven

The traditional shell for premium down comforters. A 400-thread-count downproof cambric weave that's tight enough to hold every plume of down in place, with the slightly crisp, polished hand feel of high-thread-count percale.

This is the fabric we've used for decades on our standard Bavarian and Baffled Box comforters. Naturally durable. Built for daily use under a duvet cover.

Available on Standard Bavarian, Baffled Box 700, and Baffled Box 850.

Organic Cotton Batiste

Soft · Sustainable · OCS Certified

A 300-thread-count organic cotton batiste with a softer and lighter hand. Batiste is woven differently to maintain downproof performance at a lower thread count, producing a more breathable, luxurious feel against the skin.

Naturally unbleached, undyed, and OCS-certified organic. The sustainable upgrade for buyers who prefer natural fibers next to the skin every night.

Available on Organic Bavarian Comforter (700+ or 850+ fill).
Make it last decades

How to care for a down comforter.

A well-cared-for down comforter can last 20+ years. Here are four key care tips to get the most life out of your down comforter.

01

Use a duvet cover

The cover takes the dirt, sweat, and oils so the comforter doesn't have to. Wash the cover regularly; the comforter rarely needs washing.

02

If you need to, wash your comforter

Washing your comforter from time to time can help remove dirt, sweat, and oils that accumulate over time. Use a large-capacity front-loader (some home washers are too small for a comforter) or a commercial machine at a laundromat. Always use down-specific soap, and tumble dry until dry. See the full instructions in our washing guide →

03

Air it out

A couple of times a year, air out your down comforter. Hang it outside (hopefully on a dry, low-humidity day) for a few hours.

04

Store uncompressed

If you're changing comforters for the season, or just need to store your comforter, do so uncompressed. Ideally in a breathable cotton, linen, or mesh storage bag. Never store a wet or damp comforter. Store in a cool, dry place.

Common questions

Down comforter frequently asked.

Construction. Bavarian uses sewn-through stitching that pinches the top and bottom fabric together at each chamber edge, producing a pillowy quilted look. Baffled Box uses internal vertical fabric walls (baffles) that let down loft fully without compression at seams, producing a flat, smooth, hotel-style finish. Bavarian is more traditional and tolerant of active sleepers; Baffled Box delivers more loft and warmth at the higher fill weights.

Fill power measures how much loft (volume) one ounce of down produces in a standardized lab test. Higher fill power means each ounce traps more air, which translates to more warmth per ounce and lighter overall weight. Our 700+ comforters use excellent down at an outstanding price-to-quality ratio. Our 850+ comforters use the highest-grade down for the lightest, loftiest, lifetime-investment option.

The Organic Bavarian uses the same Bavarian sewn-through construction as our standard Bavarian, but wraps the down in a 300-thread-count organic cotton batiste shell. The cotton is OCS-certified organic, naturally unbleached and undyed. You can choose between 700+ or 850+ fill power. It's the comforter to pick if sustainability and natural fibers are priorities, without sacrificing the construction style.

Our most popular weights are Light and Medium. If you live somewhere warm year-round (Pacific Northwest, California, Deep South) or sleep hot, choose Light. If your bedroom runs cold or you reach for an extra blanket nightly, choose Arctic. The Ultimate weight is reserved for very cold climates or unheated rooms. The most common return we see is buyers exchanging Medium for Light, so when in doubt, pick the cooler weight.

The Responsible Down Standard is an independent certification that verifies down comes from animals that were never live-plucked or force-fed, and that the supply chain is traceable through every step. We've used 100% RDS-certified down across every product since March 2015. Our certification number is TE-99977174, audited annually by independent third-party auditors.

Yes, with the right approach. Use a large-capacity front-loading washer (most home washers are too small for a comforter, so a laundromat is often better), a down-specific cleaner like Nikwax or Granger's, and tumble dry on low for 3 to 6 hours with three or four clean tennis balls to break up clumps. Skip top-load agitators (they damage down) and regular detergent (it strips natural oils). See the full instructions in our washing guide →

A duvet cover is optional. Some people prefer the look of the comforter as-is. However, we believe a duvet cover is a great addition to a down comforter. The cover takes the dirt, sweat, and skin oils so the comforter doesn't have to, then washes easily on its own. Without a duvet cover, you'll need to wash the comforter itself more often. We make organic cotton duvet covers in several colors and natural undyed options.

20+ years is realistic for a well-cared-for premium down comforter. The down itself can last decades; the shell fabric is usually what wears first. We routinely see customers send back comforters from the 1990s for cleaning and minor repair, and they go right back into service. The biggest factors in longevity are using a duvet cover, washing when needed, and storing uncompressed.
