Pro and cons

Overall great. I’ve used this in temperatures -20 F. in Montana for three consecutive days and nights, among other places in Rockies. The Pros: 1. I’m 6’3” and I fit just a little snuggly in the long size. I wish there was a little more room because I sleep with my boots, water, and other gear. I can still fit those items in the sleeping bag, but it makes it a much tighter fit. 2. The material is tough. Seems like it will last long and a few abrasions. The material is thick yet somehow light and compact. 3. Packs very small. I actually got a stuffsack that is almost twice as small as the one that comes standard with the sleeping bag. It works great, but definitely keep you sleeping bag stored loose, and not in a stuff sack, FYI. 4. The zipper is the most durable on the market. I have seen many quality and low quality zippers in my time in the military. The zipper for this bag is among the best. It zips easy and is strong. 5. Moisture is death in cold weather. This sleeping bag held up against my breathing into the sack fairly well, but after 3 days I could feel the moisture slowly building in the sleeping bag. On day 3 I actually had to breath on the outside because I was afraid I would get too cold if the bag took on too much more moisture. It was uncomfortable doing that because of how cold it got (night time was easily -20 f.). Cons: 1. The color options are pretty bad. Where is black or brown or green? Blue stands out too much for me. 2. It still gets a little cold. I wear the down booties which help a lot. Over days of sleeping in extreme cold, the bag builds up moisture IF you breathe into the bag. 3. It’s hard to find a decent bivy cover, because the sleeping bag is so bulky. I use the standard military bivy cover and that is large enough.

Feathered Friends Peregrine Rocks for Alpine Mountaineering

Took this up Mount Sanford in Alaska. Held its own in serious snowstorms, wind, and cold temperatures to 15,000 feet. Packs remarkably small for a rock solidly built bag. Feathered Friends has the corner on the market when it comes to serious mountaineering sleeping bags. I own the 30, 20, 10, 0, and -25 bags, and have my eye on the -40F now as well. You cannot go wrong with Feathered Friends. I often ask for one or two ounces of extra down in mine. You want Feathered Friends when you sleep in that tent in those conditions at altitude (see photo).

Incredible

We had a cold snap in Colorado over the weekend which allowed me to test this bag in the -20F to -25F range. I only had a base layer on and was toasty the entire night. The bag also does a great job of handling moisture. I had no problems with breath condensation getting in and the Pertex Shield Air panel does an excellent job of getting any perspiration out. I am almost exactly six feet tall and got the regular and Feathered Friends is absolutely correct to say it is the ideal size. There is plenty of space to both spread out and still stash fuel, boot liners, gloves, and clothes. The little zippered pocket is a nice bonus touch. This was my first Feathered Friends bag and I will definitely be coming back for more.
