Weigh and warmth winner (albeit with "crispy" sounding material)
This is a super bag. Amazingly lightweight and warm which is why I went with it. I did see one review before purchase that mentioned the loud outer shell material, which made me nervous and sent me looking for other sleeping bags without the "chip packet" effect for many months. I couldn't find any that were this warm and light, and so took the risk (and took a breath at the price, esp with my South African exchange rate) and bought the Egret UL20. While I'm glad I did, it must be noted that the outer material is indeed loud. For those who are sound sensitive, it's noticeable from the get go. What I wish it did have was a deeper hood. The Egret's is very shallow and more a gesture of a hood than something really functional in serious cold. You'd have to wear a warm beanie rather than rely solely on the bag's hood. Other than these 2 cons, the pros of the bag are top notch and as I said above, I could not find a bag that was this lightweight with the same warmth rating and am very happy with it.
Kept me so warm and cozy on a mountain top!
The first time I used my Petrel bag was in Great Smoky Mountain National Park in March. I sleep very cold, so of course I'm always skeptical of ratings. Temps dropped to 19 degrees one night and the wind chill dropped the temp into the single digits. It was cold. My Petrel kept me warm throughout the night and I love this product. I just ordered a down jacket because I'm so impressed by Feathered Friends products. Excellent customer service too, highly recommend!
Best outdoor purchase I've ever made
I absolutely LOVE this sleeping bag. I've owned it for a year (purchased in Feb. 2023) and wanted to wait until I'd tested it in all weather before reviewing. For context, I am a freezing cold camper — I've used a 35* bag and been chilly in 60* weather. I did quite a bit of research on the best bags and stumbled upon Feathered Friends. Their customer service was excellent; I called to ask about the difference between the UL and YX bags and they were patient/answered all my questions. This bag (I bought the 20*) is COZY and toasty; I've used it on a 70* camping trip in the fall, in a 50* hammock camping trip, and a negative-windchill trip in the NH presidential traverse and have been equally happy in all circumstances. On the last night in NH, it was mid-teens and we slept in a lean-to (no door, no tent). I used footwarmers and slept in a few layers and actually woke up sweating at one point. We spent an entire day hiking in -15 below windchill, and after 10 minutes in this bag after the freezing day, I was toasty warm. I'm 5'2" and have never had a bag that truly fit me; I'm always trying to warm up 6+ extra inches of bag. The small Egret UL 20* is a perfect fit for me. I'm a side-sleeper and have plenty of room to sleep on my side with one leg in a "flamingo" pose. I think this could fit someone up to 5'4"; I have a little extra room in it. I really look forward to snuggling into this bag every night. I pack it down using a Sea to Summit dry bag and it gets to a little smaller than a basketball (probably the height of a nalgene on its end and the width of a nalgene on its side). It is wildly light, warm, and relofts well, even after being packed into the compression bag all day. I've truly never been warm while sleeping on any camping trip, and this bag has changed that on every single trip, no matter the temp. I haven't noticed any issues with the zipper catching. I don't feel like it sounds like a bag of chips (it is definitely way quieter than my sleeping mat, the Nemo thermarest) and have never had anyone I'm camping with complain about its noise. A few feathers escape here and there, but it is well-made and has held up incredibly well in the year I've been using it. The hood could be a little bigger, but I never really use the hood while camping anyway since the bag is a teeny bit long for me/when I'm snuggled in up to my nose, the hood doesn't reach my head anyway. For cold sleepers, this bag is an 11/10 — light, warm, able to adjust the positioning of the down to accommodate summer adventures or winter trips. I love it (and convinced my partner to buy a larger one for his own use because he loved mine so much!) Thank you, Feathered Friends, for making such an incredible product that makes camping so much more comfortable and fun!
My wife loves this sleeping bag!
I recently purchased the Egret 30-degree sleeping bag for my wife, and she loves it! High quality product, and she really likes the women's specific cut. She's 5'3", and the size small is a perfect fit.
Poor Quality
It's warm, it's beautiful but it's already coming unstitched! I invested in this bag thinking it would be an excellent quality, ultralight bag that would be with me for thousands of kilometres, but after 10 nights the stitching along the zip has come undone in not one but two different places! I'm heart broken.
