How to Wash a Down Comforter & Bedding

A high-quality down comforter is an investment in sleep. Proper cleaning preserves the 700+ or 850+ fill power loft and removes oils that can degrade down over time.

Quick Guide: Washing Down Bedding

  • Machine: Front-loading, large capacity (Laundromat recommended for King/Queen).
  • Soap: Specialized down cleaner (e.g., Nikwax Down Wash Direct).
  • Temp: Warm water with an extra rinse cycle.
  • Drying: Low to medium heat for 3–5 hours with dryer balls.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Inspect & Spot Treat Check for tears or loose seams before washing. Spot clean small stains with a damp cloth and mild soap to avoid unnecessary full washes.
  2. The WashUse a front-loading machine only. Alternatively, you can use a top-loader without a central agitator. However, avoid using a top-loading washer with a central agitator, as these can catch and tear the delicate internal baffles of a comforter. Use a gentle or delicate cycle with warm water.

Only use a down specific soap or cleaner. Detergent measurements are often geared towards outdoor garments. We recommend using the garment measurement for down pillows and the sleeping bag measurement for comforters and throws. When in doubt? Add more!
  3. Double Rinse Down is highly absorbent and traps soap easily. Run a second rinse cycle to ensure all detergent residue is completely flushed out.
  4. TransferCarefully transfer the heavy, wet bedding to the dryer. Be gentle to avoid putting too much stress on the stitching while the down is heavy with water.
  5. The Drying ProcessDrying is the most critical step. Use low to medium heat. Every 30 to 60 minutes, remove the comforter and break up any "clumps" of wet down by hand to ensure an even dry. The drying process can take a long time! Be sure your comforter (or pillow) is completely dry before storing. When in doubt, dry more.
