Down Comforter Guide

We make all of our bedding here in Seattle, Washington with premium goose down that you can use day in and day out, year after year. Wherever you live or sleep, we have a comforter that will keep you warm and comfortable.

If you’re looking for a new comforter and need some help choosing between the many comforter styles  we offer, you’re in the right place. You have three areas to consider:

  • Down Fill Power: 700+ fill power or 850+ fill power
  • Construction: Bavarian or Baffled Box
  • Warmth: Summer, Light, Medium, Arctic, or Ultimate

700 Fill Power vs 850 Fill Power

All of our down bedding -- both comforters and pillows -- is offered with either 700+ Fill Power Down or 850+ Fill Power Down. Both are over 90% white goose down sourced from Eastern Europe and certified under the Responsible Down Standard. Both are excellent, but for people looking for the absolute best, 850+ fill power is the way to go. If you’re struggling to choose between them, remember that larger down plumes (those higher fill power numbers) retain more heat than smaller plumes, so 850+ fill power down will provide a little extra warmth compared to the 700+ fill power.

If you like a tad bit less warmth to your comforter or are looking for a more affordable option for all-around use, choose a 700+ fill power comforter. If you want the ultimate in quality, luxury, and warmth, 850+ is the series for you.

Baffled Box vs Bavarian

Just like down garments and sleeping bags, there are several ways that down comforters can be constructed in order to maximize the loft of down without allowing it to shift excessively. We offer two construction styles: Bavarian (or sewn-through) comforters have square pockets that are completely stitched through both layers of facing fabric, which prevents any down from shifting between chambers and produces a puffy, quilted finish. Baffled Box comforters, on the other hand, have vertical fabric walls (baffles) between the top and bottom layers of those seams, creating a more even distribution of down and a flatter finish.

Inherently, a Bavarian comforter is difficult to fill with large amounts of down, and the Baffled Box is difficult to fill with small amounts. This means that we only able to offer Light comforters in the Bavarian style, and Ultimate comforters in the Baffled Box style.

If you are an active sleeper, have children or pets that sleep with you, or like the puffier look of a fully quilted comforter, choose the Bavarian style. If you prefer a flat top for your bedding opt for the Baffled Box style.

Comforter Weight

Everyone sleeps differently, so be sure to consider your specific needs and preferences, not just temperature, when choosing the comforter weight that is right for you.

  • Are you a warm sleeper or a cold sleeper?
