The Process

How rentals work.

A simple, personal process. We talk through your trip, build the right kit, and have it ready when you walk in. If you're not in Seattle, we also ship rentals. Four steps from "I'm thinking about a trip" to "I'm out the door."

Step 01

Browse the rates

Below: every rental item in our line, with daily, weekly, and monthly pricing. Identify the gear your trip calls for.

Step 02

Reserve with us

Call or visit the Seattle store to confirm dates and pay for your rental. Reservations lock the gear in for your dates.

Step 03

Pick up your kit

Stop by the Seattle store on your pickup day. We'll fit crampons to your boots, walk through the gear, and answer any last-minute trip questions.

Step 04

Return when you're back

Drop the gear off at the store on your return day. Pickup and dropoff days are free. Tell us about the trip while you're there.

Heads up: Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially for popular dates around climbing seasons. Booking ahead by a few weeks is the safest play.
Why rent from us

Built for the trip-of-a-lifetime, not the every weekend.

A -40°F sleeping bag is incredible on Denali and overkill at the local campground. Rentals exist for the trips that don't justify a $1,000 piece of kit you might use once a decade.

Expedition outfitting

Discounted weekly and monthly rates for serious trips: Alaska, Antarctica, South America, the Himalaya. Combine bag, parka, and pants into an Expedition Package and save further on the full kit.

Try before you buy

Apply up to a 2-day rental's price toward the purchase of any similar regular-priced item within 3 months. The best way to confirm a sleeping bag fits before committing to one for life.

Free pickup & dropoff days

All rates include the pickup day and the return day at no charge. The clock starts when your trip starts, not when you walk out of the store.

Crampons, fitted in store

All crampons must be fitted to your boots in the store at pickup to ensure compatibility. Our staff handles the fit so you walk out with gear you can trust on the mountain.

Rental Rates

Sleeping bag rates.

Nearly our entire down sleeping bag line is available for rent, including expedition bags, Penguin double bags, and ultralight versions like the Flicker, Tanager, Vireo, and more. Whether you're testing fit or heading to Denali with a Ptarmigan, we have it.

All rentals include free pickup & return days. Feathered Friends rental bags may use non-standard fabrics.

Common Trips

What people rent for.

A handful of trips drive most of our rental volume. If yours is on this list, we have probably outfitted dozens of others for the same adventure.

Cascade Volcanoes

Mt. Rainier, Baker, Adams

Single-night or multi-day climbs in the PNW's classic peaks. Most parties don't need the bag full-time, just for a summit attempt or course.

Typical kit 0°F or 20ºF bag · Volant Jacket · crampons · ice axe · trekking poles
Major Expeditions

Denali, Aconcagua, the Himalaya, & the seven summits

Three-week Alaska expeditions and 8,000m attempts. The Expedition Package (bag, parka, and pants together) is the cheapest path.

Typical kit -25ºF to -40°F bag · Khumbu parka · Helios pants
Backcountry Skiing & Snowshoeing

AIARE 1 & 2 classes

Beacon, shovel, probe: required for any avalanche course and wise for any days in the backcountry. The Avalanche Package bundles all three.

Typical kit Beacon · shovel · probe (Avalanche Package)

Antarctic & Arctic trips

The warmest gear we make, on monthly rates. Guide services and individuals heading south rent the full kit for one season.

Common Questions

Rental questions, answered.

If we don't cover it here, give us a call. Our staff handle these conversations every day.

Three ways:

For Cascade volcano season (May–September) and AIARE class season (December–March), we recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks ahead. Popular bags and avalanche packages do go out, especially on weekends.

For longer expeditions (Denali, Antarctica, Himalaya), book 4–8 weeks ahead.

Rentals are paid in full at the time of reservation to confirm and hold the gear. We accept all major credit cards and can charge over the phone, in person, or by emailed payment link.

Yes if there isn't a reservation after. Call us as soon as you know you need more time. If the gear isn't booked behind you, we'll extend at the additional-day rate listed in the rate tables. If it is booked, we may need to find an alternative.

Returns past the agreed date without contacting us are billed the late-fee rate (per day, per item) until returned.

Rent a bag for up to two days. Within three months, if you decide to purchase the same model (or a similar one) at regular price, we'll apply up to the cost of a 2-day rental as a credit toward the purchase. Just mention it when purchasing in person or over the phone.

It's the cleanest way to confirm shoulder fit, length, and warmth on a real night out before committing to a long-term piece.

Yes, we can ship rentals! Please account for shipping time when planning out your rental.

A few categories aren't rental-stocked:

  • Tents — too often damaged.
  • Backpacks — fit varies dramatically by torso length; better to buy or borrow.
  • Boots — same fit issue, plus hygiene.

For these categories, we sell and can advise on options, but we don't rent.

For sleeping bags, we have Regular and Long lengths in most models, plus Small and Medium in our women's-cut bags. We have most sizes of our apparel rental items.

Ready to book?

Two ways to reserve.

Pick whichever's easiest. We confirm dates, walk through your trip, and have the gear ready when you walk in.
