Best Sleeping Bag for Cold Sleepers
I am an extremely cold sleeper and have a hard time producing enough body heat to keep down sleeping bags warm enough throughout the night. I had gone through two sleeping bags (Nemo Disco 15 & Mountain Headwear Bishop Pass 15) and would be cold sleeping in 40 degrees. I went into the Feathered Friends store to test out the sleeping bags and I rented the Egret 20 for a night when temperatures dropped to high 30's to low 40's. Unfortunately, I was still very cold overnight. (I sleep in thermals at night and try to warm up my body before jumping in my sleeping bags). The staff was SO incredibly wonderful and refunded me for the rental since I had had such a miserable night. I was recommended the Petrel 10 UL and I added 2 oz of fill - I just took it to a backpacking trip for 5 nights in Patagonia. The lows were in the 40s but I was sweating in my bag and had to remove my thermals and keep the bag partially unzipped which is just WILD for me. I'm excited to test it in colder temperatures when backpacking into fall. I couldn't have appreciated the staff enough. Awesome people with high quality equipment. 10/10 recommend.
Comfy, light and warm.
I wanted a zero degree bag as I run quite cold, but I also wanted an ultra light bag…this one seemed to fit almost all the requirements. It’s a little long (I’m 5’6”) and I bought the bigger one, so lots of cozy space and I can fit my whole head inside. The zipper is a little sticky so I have to be careful. I’ve only used it in about 35F weather and so far so good. I imagine I’ll have to have a liner or more layers on if it was below zero, just to take up the space inside. Otherwise, love how cozy it is and how small it packs down!
Never been warmer
I'm a cold sleeper and have been using my Flicker UL 20 degree quilt (zipped up in bag format) for years. I'm always cold, and my puffy has been a necessary part of my sleep system. Decided to treat myself and upgrade and oh my god it's a dream come true. It was like sleeping in a toasty cloud. I went to sleep with a smile on my face, and never woke up from being to cold. Highly highly recommend. The only draw back that I encountered was when trying to stuff it into my backpack, it stayed kind of inflated with air so it was a slow process compared to my Flicker. I think this might be easily solved by stuffing it foot box first next time, TBD.
All the seasons of the coast ranges
I've had this bag for about 6 years. I got it because I never wanted to be cold again. I'm a REALLY cold sleeper! I have tested its limits thoroughly. Mine does not have the pertex water resistant shell, which the current product seems to have standard. I got that version because it was a bit lighter, but now I think that the pertex is probably worth it, as the only gripe I have about my bag is that it is magnet for moisture and even just my breath will leave a damp spot with soggy feathers after a cold night. I've used it for many 3 season trips in the Cascades, on Mount Rainier, and multiday Canadian spring ski touring. At -15C I stay cozy while wearing my down jacket and pants. At about -5C I'm fine with just long underwear. In the Grand Canyon I unzipped it and used it as a quilt. I've been thinking about getting a less ridiculous bag for summer activities but the small amount of weight saving doesn't seem worth the risk of ever being cold again :)
Sleeping bag ourchase
My overall experience was wonderful. I was freezing on the Appalachian trail and needed a new warmer sleeping bag asap. Your sells team was helpful and the bag arrived the following day. Thank you for saving my hike! The quality of this sleeping bag is unmatched! I'd never buy from another manufacturer ever!
