Still cold. :(

It's weird but my experience with this bag seems to be unlike everyone else's. Unfortunately, I've had this bag about 3 or 4 seasons now and I've just never been warm in it. (Forget about 'toasty'.) I was just out this last weekend.... weather was low 40's. I was wearing 260 weight Marino wool leggings, undershirt, and 1/2 zip overshirt. As well as knee high Smartwool socks and a fleece. And I was still cold. I think it may be due to the fabric. It seems really 'light', so light that it's always cold to the touch. And it just starts to creep chill on you even through clothing. Before this bag, I've tried the REI Magma 15, and a Sea To Summit 15 degree bag. I'd heard really good things about Feathered Friends and even went down to 10 degrees to try to be warm.... (For reference, I'm using a Exped Dura 8 (R-value of 7.8) sleeping pad and a Big Agnes Seedhouse 3 w/ rain fly. I store my bag uncompressed in a large bag.)

Comfy - almost warm enough in 43F.

Only used this 1 night so far but looking forward to more. Love the neck baffle feature. Zipper baffle kept cold air out. I used this during mild weather with a low temp of 43F. My feet and upper body were perfectly toasty warm, however I was cold from my hips to my knees, which was uncomfortable enough to wake me up. I sleep very cold. I used the Petral 10 UL in a double wall tent, with both mesh and fly fully zipped, on top of an Exped MegaMat 10 sleeping pad with 8.1 r-value, and wearing Patagonia mid-weight base layers with Smartwool mountaineer socks. I had to pull another sleeping bag over my legs for the remainder of the night. I'm planning to add more layers on my legs for next time - including down filled pants. I intend to use this sleeping bag for backpacking if I can figure out how to stay warm. The only bags that have ever kept me warm on chilly nights have been far too bulky to backpack with.

Best Sleeping Bag for Cold Sleepers

I am an extremely cold sleeper and have a hard time producing enough body heat to keep down sleeping bags warm enough throughout the night. I had gone through two sleeping bags (Nemo Disco 15 & Mountain Headwear Bishop Pass 15) and would be cold sleeping in 40 degrees. I went into the Feathered Friends store to test out the sleeping bags and I rented the Egret 20 for a night when temperatures dropped to high 30's to low 40's. Unfortunately, I was still very cold overnight. (I sleep in thermals at night and try to warm up my body before jumping in my sleeping bags). The staff was SO incredibly wonderful and refunded me for the rental since I had had such a miserable night. I was recommended the Petrel 10 UL and I added 2 oz of fill - I just took it to a backpacking trip for 5 nights in Patagonia. The lows were in the 40s but I was sweating in my bag and had to remove my thermals and keep the bag partially unzipped which is just WILD for me. I'm excited to test it in colder temperatures when backpacking into fall. I couldn't have appreciated the staff enough. Awesome people with high quality equipment. 10/10 recommend.

Comfy, light and warm.

I wanted a zero degree bag as I run quite cold, but I also wanted an ultra light bag…this one seemed to fit almost all the requirements. It’s a little long (I’m 5’6”) and I bought the bigger one, so lots of cozy space and I can fit my whole head inside. The zipper is a little sticky so I have to be careful. I’ve only used it in about 35F weather and so far so good. I imagine I’ll have to have a liner or more layers on if it was below zero, just to take up the space inside. Otherwise, love how cozy it is and how small it packs down!

Never been warmer

I'm a cold sleeper and have been using my Flicker UL 20 degree quilt (zipped up in bag format) for years. I'm always cold, and my puffy has been a necessary part of my sleep system. Decided to treat myself and upgrade and oh my god it's a dream come true. It was like sleeping in a toasty cloud. I went to sleep with a smile on my face, and never woke up from being to cold. Highly highly recommend. The only draw back that I encountered was when trying to stuff it into my backpack, it stayed kind of inflated with air so it was a slow process compared to my Flicker. I think this might be easily solved by stuffing it foot box first next time, TBD.
