The Vireo was designed with a single purpose in mind; fast and light alpine climbs where every gram counts. With no hood, no zipper and a variable fill (the lower half is rated at 25ºF / -4ºC, the upper half 45ºF / 7ºC) the Vireo shaves every last ounce. For maximum efficiency and warmth, pair the bag with a down jacket to not only keep you cozy but also minimize extra gear and weight when it matters most.

No hood, no zipper, no problem

After using this bag, it seems silly for a bag to have a hood and zipper. This bag is so much lighter and more compact than a similar-warmth bag with a zipper and hood. Plus, zippers are prone to breaking, and down-filled hoods get clumped up way before the rest of the bag does. If you’re too warm, just pull the bag down a bit. If you’re too cold, wear a warmer jacket underneath. Easy peasy. By the way, if you’re over 5’10”, get the 74” version. I’m 5’11” and the 68” version was decidedly too short. It barely came over my shoulders, and wasn’t even close to cinching around my neck. The 74” version is amazing for me. Full cinch around my neck; absolutely no draft. Used it in an open bivy with temps around 40 F and high winds, and slept cozy the whole night. Pairs nice with a Patagonia DAS Light Hoody (or similar) underneath.

A satisfied customer

I recently purchased a Vireo bag and a Helios vest to replace the still serviceable Vireo bag and Helios vest I have used for the last 30 years. For me, the Vireo has been a perfect travel bag. On it’s super lightweight own it’s been great. For colder times, using it with the Helios has worked well.

Lighten Up!

I purchased this for summer and early fall backpacking in the Olympics and North Cascades. I'm 6'2 and 205lbs and the bag is plenty roomy and warm for me. I have slept in it several times now down in to the low 40's with no baselayers and been comfortable. I expect it will be good for the upper and maybe low 20's with baselayers and hooded puffy jacket. I bought this to lighten my backpacking load and at barely 1lb this bag is great! I found the Vireo reading online about what climbers use for sleeping systems and think more backpackers should consider it, especially for summer alpine in the PNW.

Feathered Friends Vireo Sleeping Bag

In trying to lighten my load for backpacking in the North Cascades and Olympics primarily in the summer and shoulder seasons, I came across the Vireo. Although I'm not a climber, I thought, what do climbers use in the Northwest alpine for sleeping on the side of peaks and that lead me to the Vireo. I currently use a 20 degree FF Swift, but felt I did not really need that much bag in the summer. The Vireo is proving to be excellent for my needs. I am 6'2" 205 lbs and 44" chest. I purchased the stock Vireo at 74". The wide girth in the torso of the bag is very roomy for a side sleeper and roller like myself. I tend to sleep with my feet close together or crossed so the narrow width in the legs is fine for me. 5 stars for comfort. Warmth has only been tested down to the low 40's and I was fine wearing a long sleeve base layer, because I like to have my arms out of the bag if it's not too chilly. I wore short boxers and no socks and was perfectly comfortable at 43 degrees. I'm confident that with warm baselayers, down puffy with hood, socks and gloves, I will be warm in to the 20's and possibly even lower. Although if it going to be that cold, I will likely just use my Swift. At barely over one pound, the Vireo puffs up like a boss and will be perfect for summer backpacking in the PNW. Backpackers wanting to lighten up should consider this as an option since you already likely carry baselayers and a puffy. 5 stars for warmth for it's intended purpose. I am absolutely happy with this sleeping bag!
