Winter Light or ES?

Two approaches for winter bags. For matching 0°F and −10°F models, the shape and down fill stay the same. The difference is in the fabrics, and what you need them to do.

Winter Light

For drier conditions and trips where every ounce earns its place.

Insulation
900+ fill power goose down, with the same fill as the corresponding ES model.
Shell
Pertex® Quantum Pro® 7D × 30D ripstop. A light, water-resistant and breathable shell.
Lining
FlyTi 10D recycled nylon with a heat-reflecting titanium film. A 15D Pertex® Diamond Fuse footbox adds abrasion resistance.
Weight
Lighter fabrics reduce pack weight compared with the matching ES bag. Check each model and length for exact weights.
Temperatures
0°F / −18°C and −10°F / −23°C.

A little room.
A lot of warmth.

Our winter and expedition sleeping bags are offered up to three different widths and sizes, depending on your sleeping preference.

Before you head out.

A few details for a better night in the cold.

Is Winter Light less warm than ES?

Matching Winter Light and ES models have the same temperature rating, shape, and down fill. Choose between them based on pack weight and shell protection, rather than assuming a heavier shell means a warmer rating.

Does an ES bag replace a shelter?

No. Waterproof-breathable shell fabric adds protection, but the complete sleeping bag is not a waterproof shelter. That said, some people have open-bivvied with our Winter bags.

What if I tend to sleep cold?

Choose extra warmth beyond the overnight low you expect. Your sleeping pad, shelter, clothing, and individual comfort all affect the night. If you are between ratings, we can help you work through the options.

What about my sleeping pad?

Insulation underneath you matters, especially on snow and frozen ground. Pair your bag with a pad rated for your conditions; a warmer bag alone cannot make up for too little insulation from the ground. Depending on the conditions, we recommend sleeping pads with an R-value that is greater than 7.

Pairing an inflatable pad with a closed-cell foam pad is a good way to bolster insulation from the ground.
